Providing excellent customer service to both internal and external customers is considered a critical element in measuring employee performance.
FUNCTION:
The primary responsibility of the Animal Care Specialist is to:
Provide general care and maintenance of shelter animals, helping to increase the number of animals that remain healthy during their shelter stay through general animal, kennel and shelter cleanliness Support the receiving, processing, and adoption operations
Responsibilities:
Assist volunteers, providing guidance and support on job responsibilities and tasks Support adoption process by screening incoming and adoptable animals and counseling potential pet adopters on their selection of pets, animal care and responsibility Support Pet Alliances' receiving process by interviewing and counseling individuals releasing their animals Examine and evaluate all incoming animals, including providing vaccinations and medications Use proper animal restraint techniques for the safety and wellbeing of the animal and the team Provide telephone follow-up with adopting families as schedule permits Provide information to the public, by telephone or in person, on a wide variety of animal issues Prepare food, then feed and provide water for animals on a regular, scheduled basis Clean and disinfect kennels, cages and associated work areas with chemical solutions Bathe, groom and exercise animals to support their overall health and wellbeing Monitor animals to ensure adequate and humane treatment and to detect early signs of disease Provide animal enrichment opportunities to give shelter animals physical activity and mental exercise Handle financial transactions with customers, routinely reconciling receipts and services provided Maximize donation and cross-selling opportunities Assist with inventory and restock merchandise, as needed Collect and organize donation items for shelter or clinic use Complete and process all necessary paperwork in a timely manner Maintain animal inventory in accordance with Pet Alliances' policies and procedures Assist with euthanasia in a humane and proper fashion, when necessary Perform general maintenance and cleaning of all shelter areas including grounds maintenance Perform delivery or supply pick-ups, as needed Maintain dress code and proper attitude at all times Attend staff meetings and training, as required Perform any other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the organization Requirements:
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent Basic skills in animal handling and basic knowledge of pet care and breed identification At least one (1) year of general work experience in a team environment Reliable transportation.
Valid driver's license with good driving record.
Direct access by phone required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
Highly motivated toward the welfare and humane treatment of all animals Ability to work with and handle animals safely and humanely Demonstrated experience in dealing and communicating effectively and tactfully with the public Demonstrated ability to learn tasks rapidly Demonstrated ability to apply excellent judgment in making decisions in accordance with organizational policies and procedures Agreement to support Pet Alliances' policies and procedures PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands of the job require standing, walking and bending for extended periods of time throughout each shift, with lifting requirements of approximately 50 - 75 pounds.
Must be able to successfully handle both routine and difficult public contacts, with strong conflict resolution skills If trained, must be able to assist and/or perform euthanasia in a humane and compassionate manner in accordance with Pet Alliances' policies and procedures, when necessary WORKING CONDITIONS:
Most work is performed in the shelter and adoption/receiving areas of the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando.
It is open and well lit, adequately ventilated, noisy and somewhat distracting.
In addition, the kennels are subject to extremely warm temperatures during the summer months.
The job requires moving between rooms and buildings, which may result in increased exposure to extremes in temperature.
Job requires frequent and routinely intense public contact as well as the ability to multi-task under conditions that can be described as extremely fast paced and potentially stressful on a routine basis.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
